Vocabulary and Understanding

 

At Talbot we recognise the importance of vocabulary building, to support understanding. Children access a language rich and subject specific curriculum, which is planned to build progression. Key terminology is also revisited; as a result, language is retained for longer.  

Strategies used on a daily basis include:

  • Identifying and discussing new language in all curriculum areas
  • Using and applying this vocabulary, so it is contextualised and better retained
  • Recognising when subject specific words are important, as they allow greater access to the curriculum
  • Celebrating the understanding of words and acknowledging when these new words are used, to help children to learn more - better
