Autumn extravaganza – looking at the autumnal weather

During the first half term of the year, the children in nursery fully embraced the season of autumn. As the seasons change and the weather gets cooler, autumn is a great season for children to spot changes in the environment and the world around them. The children in nursery showed natural curiosity in what they observed, for example the leaves changing colour and falling off the trees as well the mountain of acorns that fell off our oak tree this year. We followed the children’s natural interest in these changes and decided to have a week where we celebrated all things autumn during our ‘Autumn extravaganza’. The children were invited to come to nursery dressed in autumn colours or costumes and throughout the week, our teaching and learning focused around autumn animals, food and even some autumn maths!

During our phonics sessions over the week, the children listened to a variety of autumn sounds and were asked to try and guess what they could hear, helping children to tune in and discriminate between different environmental sounds. On Thursday, we held our ‘Pumpkin party’ to finish off the week and as well as making and tasting pumpkin soup, the children also spent lots of time developing their physical skills by chopping up pumpkin and other vegetables in our outdoor woodland kitchen.
