Mathematical development - exploring patterns

Learning to recognise patterns in the environment and in the world around us is an essential element of our maths learning in nursery. As part of the White Rose Maths scheme, the children in nursery have a range of opportunities to explore and learn about pattern. For example, we have looked at patterns on our clothes and had fun seeing if our friends had patterns too. Linking in to our phonics learning, we also made patterns with our bodies through body percussion. The children also had the opportunity to make their own patterns using paint and printing.

To start our learning and investigation around pattern, the children took part in a pattern hunt around the school. We went on a wander around the school grounds looking closely at the things around them, such as the pattern of the bricks on the wall and on the drain covers. This hands-on activity also gave the children the chance to explore other maths concepts such as shape and size. The children also used cars (and their hands!) to make patterns in sensory materials, such as hand soap in the tuff spot.
