A visit to nursery from the police
We were lucky enough to have a visit from two local police officers in the spring term, following a deep and consistent interest in and lots of role play of police in nursery. We enhanced a corner of nursery to become a police station and the children thoroughly enjoyed not only arresting each other but also us teachers too!
The children also drew pictures of the people they were on the look out for, for breaking our nursery rules such as running inside nursery and ‘breaking the toys’. We were keen for the children to learn more about what other jobs the police do and so as well as asking some local officers to visit us, we also shared some books describing what else the police do to help us and the community.
During the police visit the children had the opportunity to try on some child size uniforms as well as learn about the different features of the police van, which of course included listening to the siren and seeing the flashing lights!
The officers also talked to the children about how to use the telephone to call the police in an emergency.
