Outdoor collaborative dramatic play
One rainy day at Talbot, the Reception children went outside to play, unplanned and uninhibited by the weather they began to make up a game together that ran and ran to epic proportions!
It began with some umbrellas and one getting caught on the tree so it hung upside down. This inspired the children to fill it with foam bricks and explore how many it could hold before tipping.
“We need more umbrellas! It’s too full!” Fred
“It’s too heavy.” Ovie
This became a team effort to hang umbrellas and fill them with bricks for the new building site.
Others began to join in.
“Come and get your bricks!” “I’ve got a brick shop.” Maryam
Soon children were buying bricks, loading up vehicles and transporting them to the building site.
Others began building a barrier to keep it safe adding lights so the workers could see at night.
Then it was time for a break down at the mud kitchen take away.
“Hot chocolate for the builders!” Florence
“Break time” Freddie
Soon a hot chocolate factory emerged. A large muddy puddle was scooped into containers and transported to a new network of pipes as ‘hot chocolate’. This travelled to the take away and provided the resources to make the builders refreshments.
Amazing collaborative play with wonderful communication and imagination, showing just how much child led learning through play can take place outside, in all weathers!
