Early mathematics – understanding number

Reception children completed a range of maths activities, in the spring term, to support their understanding of number.

The children explored the numbers 5-10, learning about careful counting, how to represent 1 more and 1 less than, subitising and finding different ways to combine parts to make a whole. They also looked at odd and even number patters, and they doubled some numbers to make amounts up to 10.

The learning includes using a variety of slides from White Rose Maths scheme, Number Blocks, songs and practical activities. The children do most of their investigating using concrete objects, as this helps them visualise the processes they are completing.

Active learning also keeps their brains alert and their bodies busy.
