Physical Education – gymnastics
In PE, Year 6 have been developing their gymnastics skills. This unit builds upon significant previous learning, as gymnastics is taught every year at Talbot. It allowed them to use their knowledge of compositional principles, such as how to use variations in level, direction and pathway, how to combine and link actions and how to relate to a partner and apparatus when developing sequences.
The children began by learning how to safely and effectively perform a variety of rolls. Some children had the skills to combine this with some of the basic gymnastic moves such as a pike or tuck. They then went on to learn about the difference between counter balance and counter tension, before using this knowledge to create their own sequence of balances. At each stage, the children worked with a partner, who offered them advice and feedback.
They were also given many opportunities to share their work with the class, in order to receive constructive peer assessment. This allowed pupils to develop their critical thinking, as well as allowing good examples to be shared.
The children are looking forward to the gymnastic lessons coming up, which will help them to consolidate and build on the skills they have already learnt. By the end of the unit, they will be able to create complex sequences, thinking carefully about the quality and control of their actions.
