A Geographical Study – learning about the businesses on Street Lane

The first Connected Curriculum topic for Year Six is all about their local area of Roundhay! We build upon their previous knowledge from earlier in school to look at historical maps of the locality, discovering what have changed and developed using their map reading skills. As geographers, the children of Year 6 study the economic services along Street Lane. In class, we looked at large scale maps of the local area and devised a questionnaire to ask members of the public.

During our fieldwork, the children identified the purpose of each building along the street, looking at whether it was providing a service or goods to people. Members of the public were also asked a range of questions on topics such as how often they visited the shops, where they live, and what changes they would like to see. Politeness and good manners were very much in evidence and thankfully everybody was very happy to answer all of the questions!

Back in the classroom, we mapped the information on large scale maps and combined all of our data to find out what the popular shops and services were. We found out that they were a lot of cafes and restaurants, which meant that the people of Roundhay clearly had lots of money to spend!
