Art and Design – making collaged Anglo-Saxon Brooches

In the Spring term, Year 4 designed and made Anglo-Saxon brooches, in Art and Design.

The topic started by learning about the designer ‘Faberge’ and the history of Faberge jewellery. This linked into learning about Anglo Saxon Brooches, which were worn as an expression of wealth and status, as well as being useful for fastening clothes.

The children explored a range of images of brooches; considering the materials used as well as the decorative features created with spirals, knots and jewels. Then, they created a mood board of the features and used this to inspire their own designs.

The children’s designs were transferred onto cardboard, which was then built up with string, matchsticks and paper mâché, to create texture and give the brooch 3D form.

Finally, the children painted their brooches in metallic paints and added more intricate details, such as gems.  The finished brooches looked spectacular, and taught the classes a lot about multi-media art.
