Inspired by local landscapes – connecting Geography and Art

As part of our connected curriculum topic on our local area, Year 2 planned and walked a route to a local landmark: The Mansion in Roundhay Park. The children carefully followed their selected route on their maps and they recorded the human and physical features they saw along the way. When they arrived at The Mansion, the children became photographers, using iPads to take photographs of the landscape and landmarks.

Following our visit to the art gallery earlier this half term, Year 2 built on their knowledge of Atkinson Grimshaw, learning more about his style of painting. The children chose a photograph from the ones they took at Roundhay Park, dividing it into four equal parts to support their sketching, where they thought carefully about the foreground and background. Different pencil types were used to ensure the foreground objects appeared in silhouette. Year 2 developed their knowledge of how to use soft pastels to create tints, tones and shades. The soft pastels were then used on top of their sketches to create a nocturnal effect, replicating the style of Atkinson Grimshaw.

The children found it very rewarding to create a landscape they had actually seen in real life and they enjoyed learning new techniques to support them in mixing a range of tints, tones and shades to create a nocturnal effect in the style of a local artist.
