Religion and World Views – a visit to the Sinai Synagogue

In March, Year 3 visited the Sinai Synagogue in Leeds.  Our classes visit the Sinai Synagogue each year to learn about Judaism and to experience a Jewish place of worship. It is a wonderful opportunity for the children to explore a faith that may be different from their own and to deepen their understanding of the diverse communities around them.

During the visit, the children learned about how Jewish people pray, including the importance of the tallit (prayer shawl) and the kippah (head covering). They also listened to some Hebrew blessings and discovered why the synagogue is such an important place for learning, celebration, and worship within the Jewish community.

When the children entered the synagogue, they were immediately drawn to the beautiful Ark at the front of the prayer hall. Inside the Ark are the Torah scrolls, which are the most sacred texts in Judaism. The children noticed the decorative coverings, the Hebrew writing, and the special way the Torah is looked after and handled.

Many of the children had the chance to ask thoughtful questions, and they particularly enjoyed seeing the Torah scroll up close and learning how it is read. It was a meaningful experience that helped them understand how Jewish people worship and the traditions that are important within the faith.

A big thank you to everyone at the Sinai Synagogue for welcoming us so warmly and for helping the children learn so much during their visit.
