Physical development – strengthening our fine and gross motor skills

Children in the early years need constant access to activities that develop their physical skills.

Those that work the large muscles (gross motor) as well as those that help develop the small muscles (fine motor) are all important. Some of the ways children can practice these skills in nursery include climbing trees and equipment in the garden, as well as during our weekly movement play sessions.

There are also plenty of opportunities to use those small muscles in their hands and fingers, such as completing jigsaws, squeezing play dough and using large chalks on the playground outside.
