Embracing Hip-Hop: expressing yourself and being resilient
In an exciting and engaging session, 2GI had the privilege of welcoming Phil Tang, from Hello Hip-Hop to Talbot. Phil spoke passionately about his love for creativity and the values of hip hop culture, highlighting a significance of self-expression. The interactive workshop provided an enriching experience that resonated deeply with the students, fostering a great appreciation for artistic expression and individuality.
Throughout the session, Phil captivated the students through a variety of different performances linked to the art of hip-hop, showcasing his talents of beatboxing and dancing which inspired the children greatly. Phil spoke about how hip-hop changed his outlook on the challenges of daily life, highlighting its roots in creativity, resilience and community. The children were immersed in the diverse elements of hip hop culture, gaining insights into an unfamiliar culture.
Phil encouraged students to embrace their unique voices and perspectives, stressing the importance of authenticity and ‘being yourself’. Pupils had the opportunity to perform a variety freestyle dance moves and they loved adding their own ‘flavour’ to their performances which inspired a desire to be individualistic and expressive.
