Problem-solving adventures – team work

Year 1 had the chance to take part in a very special problem-solving session, and what a fun-filled session it turned out to be. From the very start, the school field was buzzing with excitement as the children discovered they would be working together to solve puzzles and put their brilliant brains to the test.

The session began with the challenge to cross the lava river using wooden circles only. The children quickly got stuck in, laughing and smiling as they tried out their ideas. It was lovely to see them experimenting, testing different answers and even cheering when their group got something right! There were lots of cries of “We can do it!” and “Let’s try again!” as the groups encouraged each other to keep going.

Teamwork was the real star of the session. The children worked beautifully together — sharing ideas, taking turns and listening carefully to each other’s suggestions, most of the time. There were moments of great excitement when a group solved a puzzle, with high-fives, clapping and proud smiles all around. It was clear that working as a team made the activity even more fun. Some children even said their favourite part was helping their friends.

Problem-solving is such an important skill, and this session showed just how much children can learn from it. It helps them practise thinking carefully, spotting patterns and not giving up when something feels tricky. When teamwork is involved, the benefits grow even bigger — the children learn how to cooperate, take turns and build on each other’s ideas. These are life skills that will help them far beyond the classroom and it was amazing to see them learning them while having so much fun.

It was a session full of laughter, teamwork and determination — and Year 1 left with big smiles and a big sense of achievement. If this session is anything to go by, the children will have a successful year ahead of them.
