Memorable trips: Year 6 learn about WWII by visiting Eden Camp

In Autumn 2, Year 6 learnt about World War II, and more specifically, the Battle of Britain. To help them find out more about this period of history, they visited Eden Camp in Malton. This former prisoner of war camp has been transformed into an interactive museum, with different huts teaching visitors about different elements of World War II.

The exhibitions are not only informative, but also provide a strong sense of what it would have been like to live during World War II. This is achieved through realistic displays and special effects which create the sights, sounds and smells of the time. One of the huts the children particularly enjoyed was the U-boat exhibit, which is designed to replicate the inside of a German U-boat. Other huts contained numerous uniforms, civilian clothing, Anderson shelters, a blitz scene, information about evacuees and children’s games in the period. Memorable trips of this nature are an important aspect of the way the curriculum is designed at Talbot, as it helps bring the learning to life.

This trip has offered the Year 6 children an excellent starting point for their learning about the Battle of Britain in World War II. They are now excited to find out much more in their Connected Curriculum lessons. Three of the English writing topics will also be set in World War II, extending and deepening specific elements of their learning.
