Geography – using fieldwork to deepen knowledge of the local economy

This half term, Year 6 have been learning about the local area in their geography lessons.

They began the unit by learning exactly where in the world Roundhay is. They learnt that it is a suburb of Leeds, in the county of West Yorkshire. The children then went on to learn how to use Ordnance Survey maps, including how to identify geographical features using map symbols and finding out how to locate places using grid references. The classes also thought about how important this skill could be in the future; for example, if they were ever out in the countryside.

Year 6 learnt more about the area of Roundhay, discovering how it has changed over the years, with a specific focus on the economy. To help embed this understanding, they went on a geography field trip to Street Lane. There, they noted down what the land was used for, as well as interviewing members of the public about how frequently they visit Street Lane and which services they use.

Overall, this gave them a greater understanding of the both the service and goods economy, in their local area, as well as teaching them the wider importance of fieldwork in geography.
