An inspirational visit from the world’s tallest basketball player

In September, each class had the opportunity to take part in a basketball session with a special visitor to the school – Paul Sturgess.

Paul is a professional basketball player, who played for a number of teams, including the Harlem Globetrotters. They found it really inspirational to hear about his career and his many achievements. Paul is not only known for sport, but is also in the Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest man in the United Kingdom, standing at an incredible 7ft 7. In the last few years, he has used his height in other ways, starting to work in TV and films appearing alongside many well-known actors.

Paul began the day by giving an assembly to tell the children about his life, before inviting some of them to have a go at some basketball tricks. Each class then had a basketball workshop with him. In these, the classes took part in many different dribbling races, where they had to race to pick up cones as a team. This was great fun and the children could feel their skills improving with each race they did.

Paul then answered any questions. It was an amazing experience and showed the Year 6 children that one can achieve anything if you persevere.
