Mathematics – teaching measures in a concrete way

Year 3 have learnt about measures in Maths.

To begin with, the children learnt and used the key facts of dividing 100 divided by 2, 4, 5 and 10 to help them read measuring scales. They used a mixture of analogue and balance scales to experience using different apparatus. The children used the scales to complete various challenges, including finding two different objects in the classroom with the same mass; they also investigated whether larger objects always have a bigger mass than smaller objects.

The children were deeply interested in finding the mass of different objects in the classroom, even their shoes, and this practical activity was more meaningful than doing it entirely in an abstract manner, making it more memorable.
