Design Technology – pizza project (a food strand)

Year 3 completed Design Technology lessons in the spring term about ‘pizza’. This project was one that many of the children had been looking forward to since the year started.

The children began the project by learning about the origins of this popular food, and the different food products that it was made from. The children learned how cheese is made and that this process takes time. They also explored the different types of pizza bases there are, the different sauces used and the numerous toppings available in some of their favourite pizza restaurants.

Following this research stage, the children designed their own pizzas, explaining their choices for each part, and gave their designs a creative name. There was a huge buzz on the ’making day’, as the children carefully prepared and chopped all of their ingredients. The children had a fantastic afternoon in the Key Stage 1 hall, kneading and shaping their dough, spreading the sauce and adding their toppings. They also thought about the importance of adapting their original idea if it wasn’t quite going to plan.

The teachers were particularly impressed by the ambitious shapes that the children aimed to create, and the many attempts at adding a ‘stuffed crust’. It was extremely messy and showed how technical some of these processes are.

The finished products looked and smelled delicious and the children couldn’t wait to get them home to try. They were even served up in individually decorated pizza boxes and came served with a persuasive leaflet advertising the pizza.
