The history of Hip-Hop – a trip to Leeds City Museum

Some Year 5 pupils had the exciting opportunity to visit Leeds City Museum for one of the last days of their Hip-Hop exhibition.

Phil Tang, a friend of Talbot primary and founder of Hello Hip Hop, took the children around for an exclusive tour. The exhibition included a life-size model of a subway train, where they could sit and try some graffiti drawing on paper.

The children also had the opportunity to learn about B-Boy’s and B-Girls, which are the names for the people who dance in the style of ‘Breaking’. Phil shared that breaking was a dance, that would be at the Olympics in France this year, for the first time, before taking them to do a breaking workshop. The children enjoyed the opportunity to show off their moves, and they left feeling a lot more confident in themselves.

The tour was completed with a beatboxing masterclass from artist King Monk, who showed the children the key sounds to form beatboxing, and he let them have a practice on his microphone. These incredible opportunities are deeply enjoyable and give the children a more rounded view of the city around them.
