Comparing soils

In Year 4, we have been learning all about different soil types in our ‘Rocks and Soils’ topic.

We wanted a dig a little deeper with a soil hunt! We found three different locations around the school grounds to collect our samples. We took these back to the classroom and discussed our findings, noting similarities and differences from the three locations.

We then looked more closely at the six main soil types (Silt, Chalk, Peat, Sandy, Loam and Clay) before comparing their appearance and properties, including the best soils for growing plants. We decided that Loam and Peat were a gardener’s best friend!
