Volcanic Eruptions

Year 4 really enjoyed inviting our parents and carers to come and watch our volcanoes exploding!  This has been an exciting project carried out over a number of week.

Firstly, we had to create the shape of the volcano using balls of newspaper and a crater formed by an old yoghurt pot, which was balanced at the top.

We then covered the structure with papier mache.  Once this had dried, we were able to paint them adding detail such as forests, snow, waves and lava to make them look as realistic as possible.

On the day of the eruption, we added a heaped teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to the crater.  When we were ready to erupt our volcano, we added a splash of red food colouring, washing up liquid to catch the gases created and finally vinegar.  The eruptions were spectacular and great fun!
